Self-medication consists of the administration of one or more medications by the patient. NSAIDs are among the most commonly used drug classes in the context of self-medication, and nimesulide is included in this class. Studies show that this drug has a potential risk of hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity, so the objective of this work was to discuss the risks of toxicity associated with nimesulide, as well as to elucidate the role of the pharmacist in the prevention of intoxications. The study is a systematic literature review with a qualitative approach whose chosen database was MedLine/PubMed. At the end of the analysis, 122 articles were found, of which only 11 were analyzed for this review, which limits it. As demonstrated, nimesulide has a higher risk of hepatotoxicity when compared to nephrotoxicity, and patients with liver diseases may suffer greater damage when pre-sensitized with the drug. It is the role of the pharmacist to prevent intoxications caused by this drug, being present in the rational use of drugs and pharmacovigilance. According to what was discussed, it is possible to investigate potential toxicity associated with nimesulide, which would imply greater control over sales. It is also worth mentioning the importance of pharmacotherapeutic monitoring in chronic kidney disease and liver diseases.
