Resumo: | Myxomatous mitral valve disease is the most common acquired heart disease found in small and medium-sized dogs. Its prevalence is linked to age, race and sex. The factors that cause this disease are not yet clear. There are characteristics of the disease that suggest it is related to certain breeds that are genetically susceptible such as Dachshund, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Miniature Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier and Chihuahua. The disease is characterized histologically by the destruction of the fibrous layer, expansion of the loose connective tissue and mainly by the excessive accumulation of glycosaminoglycans, leading to lesions that cause loss of the integrity of the valve leaflets with the consequent appearance of mitral valve regurgitation leading to the murmur. For its diagnosis, it is essential to correlate the clinical manifestations, which may present in the form of cough, dyspnea, cyanosis, exercise intolerance, nocturnal restlessness and syncope, along with the complementary exams, the ecocardiogram being the fundamental exam to confirm the suspicion. Due to the importance and prevalence of this disease in the clinic, the present study aims to present the main points for the recognition, diagnosis and treatment of the disease in order to make its identification and control increasingly earlier so that it is possible to prolong and improve the quality of life of the animals. |
