Resumo: | Brazil is considered the country with the largest diversity of flora on the planet. This feature has attracted many researchers from various countries. Therefore, natural product chemistry (NPC) is known as the oldest research area and brings together the largest number of researchers from various fields. The research of new materials from components easily isolated from Brazilian biomass can be made from the use of these materials as raw material for new chemicals or intermediates. The observed advantages of this strategy are the production of new high value-added products that can be used to replace conventional drugs normally produced from oil industry derivatives. Thus, the present work aimed the chemical modification of raw materials from essential oils extracted from abundant vegetables in Brazil. Cinnamon(Cinnamomum cassia) essential oil was used due to its chemical structure and high purity cinnamic aldehyde, which has very reactive double bonds and aldehyde group. The reaction employed for the modification of cinnamic aldehyde was condensation with amine, which yield a imine group as the main product. The infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra clearly indicated that the modification of the molecule was successful, however the generated product did not keep antimicrobial activity as high as the original molecule. |
