Resumo: The aim of the present study was to investigate the dentoalveolar and skeletal cephalometric changes produced by the intrusion of maxillary first molars through mini-implant for orthodontic anchorage. Nineteen patients with a total of 25 extruded upper first molars were selected and managed with mini-implants combined with orthodontic treatment. The patients were divided into two groups concerning the number of mini-implants used: Group 1 was formed by 15 first molars intruded by two mini-implants, while Group 2 was formed by 10 first molars intruded by three mini-implants. The dentoalveolar and skeletal cephalometric changes was evaluated by lateral cephalometric analysis performed at the beginning (T1) and after the intrusion of the teeth (T2). According to the results, both protocols were effective for the intrusion of maxillary first molars, with no significant differences between them. Considering the skeletal changes, there was a significant decrease in FMA values between the start and end of the trial, indicating a counter-clockwise rotation of the mandible. It was concluded that the intrusion of extruded maxillary first molars through mini-implant for orthodontic anchorage has an efficient orthodontic mechanics, with no significant differences between the protocols evaluated.

Para isso foram selecionados 19 pacientes adultos que representavam 25 primeiros molares superiores extruídos por perda de dentes antagonistas. Estes pacientes foram submetidos aos procedimentos de instalação de mini-implantes e posterior intrusão dos molares, simultaneamente ao tratamento com aparelho fixo. A amostra foi dividida em dois grupos, de acordo com a quantidade de mini-implantes utilizados. O Grupo 1 consistia de 15 primeiros molares que sofreram intrusão ancorados em dois mini-implantes. O Grupo 2, de 10 primeiros molares que sofreram intrusão ancorados em três mini-implantes. As alterações, durante o tratamento, foram analisadas pelas variáveis cefalométricas e dentárias em telerradiografia em norma lateral no início (T1) e ao final da intrusão (T2) dos primeiros molares superiores. Para a análise das características demográficas (gênero e idade) dos pacientes e do tipo de má oclusão no início do estudo foram aplicados os testes T independente e Exato de Fisher. Os resultados das alterações dento-esqueléticas entre os tempos T1 e T2 em cada grupo de estudo foram comparados pelo teste T pareado. As alterações dento-esqueléticas e o tempo de intrusão foram comparados entre os métodos utilizados pelo teste T independente. description The aim of the present study was to investigate the dentoalveolar and skeletal cephalometric changes produced by the intrusion of maxillary first molars through mini-implant for orthodontic anchorage. Nineteen patients with a total of 25 extruded upper first molars were selected and managed with mini-implants combined with orthodontic treatment. The patients were divided into two groups concerning the number of mini-implants used: Group 1 was formed by 15 first molars intruded by two mini-implants, while Group 2 was formed by 10 first molars intruded by three mini-implants. The dentoalveolar and skeletal cephalometric changes was evaluated by lateral cephalometric analysis performed at the beginning (T1) and after the intrusion of the teeth (T2). According to the results, both protocols were effective for the intrusion of maxillary first molars, with no significant differences between them. Considering the skeletal changes, there was a significant decrease in FMA values between the start and end of the trial, indicating a counter-clockwise rotation of the mandible. It was concluded that the intrusion of extruded maxillary first molars through mini-implant for orthodontic anchorage has an efficient orthodontic mechanics, with no significant differences between the protocols evaluated.
