Resumo: | The actual increase of elderly population and the expectation of the overall quality of life results in higher demand for health services since this segment of the population is more vulnerable and susceptible to the onset of diseases. For that reason, the organization of various programs and policies designed to maintain health and independence of the so-called “third age”, have been quite frequent. In Brazil there are several strategies to raise health promotion for elderly people, the majority of them are promoted by intervention in groups. It is believed that this strategy is supposed to leverage the capabilities of individuals, changing their behaviors and attitudes by sharing ideas, experiences and influences from which participants can improve their quality of life. This study aims to understand the strategy of health awareness campaigns for the elderly group called "Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade" (University Open to the Elderly, in Portuguese) of UNIPAM, in the city of Patos de Minas-MG; and analyze the changes in his life from that coexistence. The research is descriptive. Its sample consists of elderly individuals, aged 60 and up, members of a group of health awareness titled UNIPAM Senior. The study included all elderly people who attended the group for at least six month, who agreed to participate voluntarily and signed a term of consent. They completed a survey with open answers and multiple choice. The results showed that group members are mostly women, who do not work, have the main source of retirement income, are literate (however, most not finished primary school), married or widowed, with children and live with relatives or others. Groups of health promotion, in the opinion of the elderly respondents have been very important, since they promote significant changes in social relations, allowing the participants, and new relationships and expanding the social network, a perception of improved health, these factors are essential for good quality of life for them. |

They completed a survey with open answers and multiple choice. The results showed that group members are mostly women, who do not work, have the main source of retirement income, are literate (however, most not finished primary school), married or widowed, with children and live with relatives or others. Groups of health promotion, in the opinion of the elderly respondents have been very important, since they promote significant changes in social relations, allowing the participants, and new relationships and expanding the social network, a perception of improved health, these factors are essential for good quality of life for them.O crescente aumento da população idosa e da expectativa de qualidade de vida implica em maior utilização de serviços de saúde, pois essa população apresenta maior vulnerabilidade e susceptibilidade ao aparecimento de doenças. A pesquisa é descritiva.
