Resumo: Health Sciences, allied to the engineerings, have been constantly widening their field of work. In this expanding area, we find included the development of bactericidal materials for use in the treatment of residual water. The present project investigates the efficiency of a reactor prototype in pilot scheme, employing activated coal impregnated with silver in the treatment of residual water, which comes from clinical analysis laboratories, aiming to remove the microbial population. The activated coal column impregnated with silver, a constituent of the reactor, was made available by BRASILAC®, a pioneer company in the making of activated coal columns for the water treatment. The activated coal utilized underwent a treatment for silver impregnation to its surface, so that it would act as a bactericidal agent. The reactor underwent treatment tests of residual water originated in clinical analysis laboratories to test its efficiency in the decrease of microorganisms density, and the analyses were carried out in flow of batches. The flow of the laboratory residual waters was conducted to the reactor filter through gravity, where a certain amount of the sample containing human biologic fluids (urine, feces and plasma) could go through the reactor column for treatment and later quantification of the number of bacteria in the water. The reactor showed considerable antibacterial actvity at the passage of residual waters, proving adequate to be used as an alternative to the treatment of residual waters from clinical analysis laboratories, as the reduction of the bacteria density reached a level near 95%. They also showed meaningful halluces of bacteria inhibition in the Agar diffusion tests, proving its bactericidal action. The Agar diffusion tests performed with fragments of the reactor column reinforced the efficiency of silver as an antibacterial agent. The significant reduction of the bacterial population in residual waters after undergoing the treatment in the reactor, as compared to non-treated waters, proves the efficiency of the activated coal column impregnated with silver.
