The present essay seeks to ressignify the usual interpretation of normativity in classical realism, especially that of the first great debate of international relations, or the debate between realists and idealists. That is to propose that, beyond first impressions, granted by Edward H. Carr and his view on political realism, there is space for comprehending the role of morality in classical realist theory - that overcomes its purely instrumental character in the analysis. We affirm that the classical realist school considers morality a relevant element for the analysis of international politics, as it is the social criterion through which political decisions are defined, in addition to these same authors prescribing conducts for state rulers - such as prudence. To corroborate these statements, we traced the roots of the realist tradition in modern philosophy such as Machiavelli and Hobbes, in addition to a critical bibliographic review of the main representatives of the classical realist school, Edward H. Carr, Hans J. Morgenthau and Raymond Aron, supported by the recent developments in the historiography of the discipline. In addition, the main national and international commentators on this debate were also used, together with contemporary and modern philosophers and their understandings of normativity
