Resumo: The aims of this study were to compare the cardiorespiratory effects, latency period, time of anesthesia, sedation and muscle relaxation score in black howler monkeys (Aloutta caraya) anesthetized with ketamine/dexmedetomidine or ketamine/midazolam combination. A total of 14 black howler monkeys were used, with a mean weight of 7.91 ± 2.0 kg and age of 7.07 ± 3.22 years, in a prospective and randomized study. The animals were healed in random order into two groups (n = 7/group), designated as CD and CM. In the CD received ketamine (10 mg/kg) + dexmedetomidine (5 μg/kg) and in CM ketamine (10 mg/kg) + midazolam (0.5 mg/kg) in both groups the drugs were mixed in the same syringe administered intramuscularly. Heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), oxygen saturation in periphery hemoglobin (SpO2), rectal temperature (TR), sedation and muscle relaxation score, latency and time of anesthesia. The variables were analyzed and recorded from 5, 10, 20 and 30 minutes after the drugs injection. The time 5 minutes was considered as baseline. Compared to baseline, HR decreased at 10, 20 and 30 minutes in the CD and CM at 10 and 20 minutes; the time 30 minutes was greater in CM. There was a significant reduction of the TR at 10 and 20 minutes in both groups compared to baseline. The sedation and muscle relaxation scores were higher in the CD in time 30 minutes. The mean latency period in CD and CM were respectively 2.53 ± 0.86 and 2.47 ± 0.65 minutes and the time of anesthesia were 58.45 ± 12.33 and 39 ± 8.41 minutes, and significantly lower in CD (p=0.018). Based on the results obtained, it can be concluded that the two associations made for chemical containment in black howler monkeys are effective. However, the CM association produced worse results, compared to the CD, which had a longer anesthetic period, better muscle relaxation and sedation. However, the administration of DC promoted cardiorespiratory depressant effects, with clinical significance in some individuals. Keywords: anesthesia; alpha 2-agonists; benzodiazepines, primates.
