Resumo: | The simulated buttoning manual dexterity test (using an apron, referred to in the present study as the Shirt Test) was recently validated to assess the bimanual dexterity of healthy young and elderly individuals with Parkinson's disease. The Shirt Test is a bimanual test, of low cost and simple to be applied. During their validation, participants made three attempts. However, a question to be clarified is whether the performance of the Shirt Test is influenced by the number of attempts made. Thus, the aim of the present study was to compare the performance of the Shirt Test between attempts and whether one attempt would be sufficient to characterize the manual dexterity of healthy individuals of different age groups. In the present study, 153 healthy individuals of both sexes were evaluated, divided into three groups according to the age group (young adults, middle-aged and elderly). All participants responded to the clinical evaluation form, and then it was checked whether the individuals met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Then, three attempts were made for the Shirt Test. For statistical analysis, comparisons were made between the three attempts and between groups considering a significance level of 5%. The results of the present study showed that young and middle-aged individuals showed similar performance regardless of the attempt analyzed. The elderly spent more time than the two groups of younger individuals to complete the test. However, at least two attempts were needed to differentiate middle-aged and elderly individuals. The findings of the present study suggest that at least two attempts should be made and when evaluating healthy individuals of different age groups through the Shirt Test. |
