Introduction: Health care-associated infections (HAI) represent serious and problematic situations that contribute to an increase in hospitalization time, hospital mortality rate, and the cost to the institution and to the health system. This study aimed to characterize how patients are involved in the process of control of HAI within the hospital environment. Method: This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, performed in a private hospital in a municipality of Serra Gaúcha. The sample consisted of 12 participants hospitalized at the hospital. The ethical precepts were respected, and this study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University Center of Serra Gaúcha - FSG under the opinion of number 62703316.2.0000.5668. Results: Based on the participants' answers, three categories were identified: factors that are related to the development of HAI, actions that the patient performs to prevent IRAS, and actions of the nursing team to prevent HAI and its subcategories described in the text. Final Considerations: The research shows the great work that can still be done in relation to the patient's involvement as the protagonist of his care security process, evidenced that few patients when approached about the concept of HAI, were able to respond adequately to the question. The nurse, being a fundamental piece for the care in health services, must attend to a safe assistance, prioritizing actions that aim at the safety of the patient, and also, that includes it in its process of treatment.
