Resumo: Endodontic treatment aims to prevent and eliminate endodontic infections. The resistance of microorganisms to intracanal medication is one of the main causes of failure in endodontic treatment. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) has been increasingly used as an adjunct method in the elimination of intracanal microorganisms. The basic principle of this therapy is the use of a light source associated with a photosensitizer in the presence of oxygen, having as end product cytotoxic species to microorganisms. The aim of this study is to explore the literature focusing on the use of photodynamic therapy in endodontics, which is effective in reducing intracanal microorganisms. As a methodology, a literature review based on books and articles published on Lilacs, Scielo and Pubmed database between 2015 and 2020 that address photodynamic therapy in endodontics was adopted. The results found demonstrate that PDT has antimicrobial action and that it has several advantages in the treatment of oral infections, mainly in the fight against resistant microorganisms. The successful use of PDT is directly linked to the type and concentration of the photosensitizing agent, output power of the laser used, irradiation time, pre-irradiation and the type of tips used.

A Terapia Fotodinâmica (PDT) vem sendo cada vez mais utilizada como método coadjuvante na eliminação de microrganismos intracanal. O princípio básico desta terapia é a utilização de uma fonte de luz associada a um fotossensibilizador na presença de oxigênio, tendo como produto final espécies citotóxicas aos microrganismos. O presente estudo tem como objetivo explorar a literatura dando enfoque no uso de terapia fotodinâmica na endodontia, a qual se mostra efetiva na redução de microrganismos intracanal. Como metodologia foi adotada a revisão de literatura com base em livros e artigos publicados entre 2015 e 2020 na base de dados Lilacs, Scielo e Pubmeb que abordem como tema a terapia fotodinâmica na endodontia. Os resultados encontrados demonstram que a PDT possui ação antimicrobiana e que esta possui diversas vantagens no tratamento de infecções bucais, principalmente no combate a microrganismos resistentes.
