Resumo: Diabetes Mellitus, witch occurs as a consequence of a partial or absolute deficiency of insulin in the organism, is associated with proteins, lipids and carbohydrates disorders in the metabolism. Currently, is considered the second more frequent endocrinopathy at the smallsized animals medical clinic. This fact is mainly due to this individuals’ bigger exposure to risk factors, such as age, gender, race, castration, obesity, physical inactivity, inappropriate diet, genetical factors, concomitant diseases and use of medicine known as diabetogenic. With a multifactorial etiology, such infirmity can be classified as: Diabetes Mellitus Type I, also known as Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus and in this modality, affect mainly dogs; Type II Diabetes Mellitus, or Non-Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, more frequent in felines and Other Specific Types of Diabetes, representing nearly 15% of the cases on this last species. For a diagnosis, it is of utmost importance to associate clinical and laboratorial finds and, afterwards, proceed with the identification of concomitant diseases, which can be responsible for the development of the Diabetes Mellitus. Immediately after its conclusion, there is a necessity of establish a therapeutic protocol that fulfill the patient individual necessities and its tutor, to track routinely in order to prevent, or, at least identify prematurely possible complications and guarantee that the animal reach a state of diabetic remission, since this is the main goal of the therapy on the feline.
