Resumo: | HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is recent in Brazil. It is a form of prevention consisting of antiretroviral medications that should be taken by people who are vulnerable to infection but have not yet been infected. Objective: Describe the benefits and barriers of PrEP, seeking to contribute to the knowledge on the subject. Method: Integrative review, with researches conducted in the Health Sciences of Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online databases and Scientific Electronic Library. The descriptors used were PrEP, HIV, Benefits and Barriers. Result: Studies have shown benefits such as using prophylaxis reduces HIV infection. The right of autonomy to choose the form of prevention that best suits your reality. And, the main barriers, the discontinuity of use due to adverse reactions and the obligation of routine consultations. Still, insufficient knowledge and information about prophylaxis. Considerations: The incentive for studies on the theme, adoption of health education practices, dissemination in the media, continuing education of health professionals and expansion of health facilities to offer PrEP. |

É uma forma de prevenção que consiste em medicações antirretrovirais que devem ser consumidas por pessoas em situações de vulnerabilidade a infecção, mas que ainda não foram infectadas. Objetivo: Descrever os benefícios e as barreiras da PrEP, buscando contribuir para o conhecimento sobre o assunto. Método: Revisão integrativa, com busca realizada nas bases de dados Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online e Scientific Electronic Library Online. Os descritores utilizados foram: PrEP, HIV, Benefícios e Barreiras. Resultado: Os estudos revelaram benefícios, como: a redução do número de infecções pelo HIV com o uso da profilaxia, o direito de autonomia onde a pessoa pode escolher a forma de prevenção que mais se adequa a sua realidade. E, as principais barreiras: a descontinuidade do uso devido a reações adversas e a obrigatoriedade de consultas rotineiras. Ainda, conhecimento e informação insuficientes sobre a profilaxia.
