The Bible is considered a sacred text which governs human behavior. Studies have shown that researches on the translation of religious texts are incipient in Brazil, and that the sacred literature has inspired researches that could provide an opening of horizons. The theme of love and mercy is recurrent in the Old and New Testament, especially in the Gospel According to Luke, regarded as the gospel of mercy. This present research has carried out a linguistic approach of the gospels from the perspective of Textual Linguistics, particularly on the matter of textual genre and intertextuality. The overall objective was to examine and describe how mercy is manifested in the linguistic materiality of the Gospel According to Luke, that is, which linguistic elements grant to it the character of merciful. The specific objectives were to examine the thematic intertextuality between the Gospel According to Luke and the Aristotle‟s Rhetoric; identify in the Bible the meaning of mercy; verify the meaning/expression of mercy in the Gospel According to Luke; and verify the role played by the context of production and the context of reception in the constitution of this gospel. This is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach, accomplished through a comparative methodology between Luke, Matthew and Mark by using six Brazilian Bible editions. A concordance program – IntraText CT ® – was used as a support in the analyses. From the corpus itself, the following categories of analysis were selected: insertion, omission, euphemization – related to the style –; universalism (friendship to everyone, absence of sectarianism) and aspects of search/salvation (the joy in finding, dynamicity and the present time – the „today‟) – related to the thematic content. These categories were applied to two central parables of this gospel. From these two narratives, some intertextual and intratextual relations were accomplished between Luke and the other gospels. The analyses based on the Bakhtinian triad of textual genres (thematic content, compositional construction and style), and on the relations of intertextuality have enabled to grant to Luke the attribution of the gospel of mercy due to its thematic content and style.
