Comics and multimodal analysis: grammar of visual design in information representation

Resumo: The growing inclusion of comic books in institutional collections highlights their relevance in pop culture and academia, a factor that implies care in their acquisition, treatment, and preservation. The complexity of comics requires strategies for information representation for access and retrieval, given their unique language that combines visual and verbal elements. This study explores how social semiotics can assist in information representation in comics, aiming to identify studies related to visual design grammar and comic book analysis to ascertain which elements can be employed in the information representation process. Social semiotics, although less explored in Information Science, focuses on communication and meaning as social practices. Multimodality and grammar of visual design are relevant here, as they emphasize the diversity of semiotic modes present in informational objects. Using a qualitative approach, a systematic literature review was conducted, selecting 20 studies after filtration. The analysis of these studies reveals that social semiotics underpin the analyses of comics, structuring them in the representational, interactional, and compositional metafunctions that shape visual language. Relevant concepts from the grammar of visual design include narrative and conceptual structure, action processes, image acts and gazes, perspectives, value systems, and salience. This approach guides information professionals in reading and describing comics, highlighting content and main themes, contributing to documentary representation. It is concluded that this semiotic approach provides guidelines enabling the comprehension of rhetorical potential and sense creation in visual and multimodal documents, as well as the development of semantic metadata.

La complejidad de las historietas requiere estrategias para la representación de la información para su acceso y recuperación, dada su singularidad lingüística que combina elementos visuales y verbales. Este estudio explora cómo la semiótica social puede contribuir a la representación de la información en historietas, con el objetivo de identificar estudios relacionados con la gramática del diseño visual y el análisis de historietas, para determinar qué elementos pueden ser empleados en el proceso de representación de información. Aunque menos explorada en la Ciencia de la Información, la semiótica social se enfoca en la comunicación y el significado como prácticas sociales. La multimodalidad y la gramática del diseño visual son pertinentes aquí, ya que resaltan la diversidad de modos semióticos presentes en objetos informativos. Con un enfoque cualitativo, se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura, seleccionando 20 estudios tras el filtrado. El análisis de estos estudios revela que la semiótica social fundamenta los análisis de historietas, estructurándolos en las metas funciones representacionales, interaccionales y compositivas que dan forma al lenguaje visual. Los conceptos relevantes de la gramática del diseño visual incluyen estructura narrativa y conceptual, procesos de acción, acto y mirada de la imagen, perspectivas, sistemas de valor y prominencia. Este enfoque guía a los profesionales de la información en la lectura y descripción de historietas, resaltando el contenido y los temas principales, contribuyendo a la representación documental. Se concluye que este enfoque semiótico proporciona pautas que permiten la comprensión del potencial retórico y la creación de sentido en documentos visuales y multimodales, así como la creación de metadatos semánticos.A crescente inclusão de histórias em quadrinhos nos acervos de instituições evidencia sua relevância na cultura pop e na academia, fator que implica em cuidados em sua aquisição, tratamento e preservação. Este estudo explora como a semiótica social pode auxiliar na representação da informação em quadrinhos, tendo por objetivo de identificar estudos relacionados à gramática do design visual e à análise de histórias em quadrinhos, a fim de verificar quais elementos podem ser empregados no processo de representação da informação. A semiótica social, embora menos explorada na Ciência da Informação, enfoca a comunicação e o significado como práticas sociais. A multimodalidade e a gramática do design visual são relevantes aqui, pois destacam a diversidade de modos semióticos presentes em objetos informacionais. Com abordagem qualitativa, uma revisão sistemática da literatura foi realizada, selecionando 20 estudos após filtragem. A análise destes estudos revela que a semiótica social embasa a análises de histórias em quadrinhos, estruturando-as nas metafunções representacionais, interacionais e composicionais que moldam a linguagem visual. Conceitos da gramática do design visual relevantes incluem estrutura narrativa e conceitual, processos de ação, ato e olhar da imagem, perspectivas, sistemas de valor e saliência. Essa abordagem orienta profissionais da informação na leitura e descrição de quadrinhos, destacando conteúdo e temas principais, contribuindo para a representação documental.
