The changes and developments of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the obsolescence of technological equipment (hardware), of computer programs (software), and also of information supports and of storage formats has brought about a new challenge: the digital preservation. This research aims at identifying and describing the aspects related to digital preservation and to the performance of the professionals involved in the management of the activities inserted in such preservation focusing on Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Making use of exploratory methodology, 16 aspects related to digital preservation were described and the skills and knowledge was proposed to the professionals involved. This research highlighted the need of participation, commitment and training from professionals of several areas of HEI within the digital preservation processes.
