It deals with the use of visual aids for contextualizing Open Government Data (OGD). Dealing with OGD can be a challenge for the average citizen. It is not enough to make large amounts of data available for download if part of the population has no knowledge of mining, processing, and analyzing raw and structured data. For experts, data has the power to elucidate problems and facilitate the search for solutions and results. For the layman, on the other hand, the countless lines of data granted by the government are difficult to interpret and, therefore, may lack meaning, value, and power of communication. It aims to understand and analyze the relationship and process of using visual resources to promote the democratization of access to government-sourced data. The method consists of a documental, qualitative and theoretical-descriptive approach of exploratory nature. As a result, it points out that allowing government data to be downloaded is not enough to solve the problems related to the abundance of data and information of public origin. The data needs to be treated and analyzed to be communicated effectively. It concludes by highlighting the importance of data visualization for popularizing access to government-sourced information for society and indicates that visual culture should be taken into consideration, since it permeates society and keep us vigilant with truth secreted in data contextualized in graphical representations.
