Resumo: Newcastle disease virus was isolated from rheas (Rhea americana) in captivity for the first time. The occurrence of the virus was determined by isolation of chick embryo, HA and HI tests were performed and reproduction of the disease in chicks was also examined.

A doença foi diagnosticada pelo quadro anátomo e histopatológico, isolamento do vírus em ovos embrionados de galinha, testes de emaglutinação e inibição da hemaglutinação. Foi, ainda, reproduzida em pintos de uma semana de idade, dos quais o vírus foi reisolado.
