Viability conservation of the germination power of rubber tree seed

Resumo: This paper reports the results concerning the influence of temperature, moisture, oxigen and microorganisms on the longevity of Hevea seed. Polythene and multifoliated paper bags for two kilos of seed, were half filled or completely filled and then kept in room temperatures around 27°C or 10°C. Polythene bags kept an evenly high moisture and a corresponding high seed viability up to 180 days. Better results were obtained in half filled polythene bags at ambient around 27°C. Paper bags did not keep the original moisture content in the seed as well as polythene bags did. Therefore, seed in paper bags lost their viability in a tew days. Seed germination and vigour increased in the polythene bags, however a decrease was evident at the end of the 180- day period.

Seed germination and vigour increased in the polythene bags, however a decrease was evident at the end of the 180- day period.Este trabalho teve por base o controle de fatores extrínsecos às sementes de seringueira (Hevea brasiliensis, Muell Arg.) (temperatura, umidade, oxigênio e ação de fungos e bactérias) e a análise de sua influência sobre a viabilidade das sementes armazenadas. Foram usados sacos de plástico (impermeáveis) e sacos de papel multifoliares (semipermeáveis) com capacidade para 2 kg, totalmente cheios e meio cheios, como embalagem. O armazenamento foi feito à temperatura ambiente (± 27°C) e à  temperatura de câmara fria (± 10°C). Os sacos de plástico mantiveram a umidade das sementes sempre alta e conservaram sua viabilidade até aos 180 dias. Os melhores resultados foram obtidos para sementes armazenadas em sacos de plástico meio cheios, à temperatura ambiente. Sacos de papel multifoliados não servem para o armazenamento de sementes de seringueira porque provocam a sua dissecação e a perda do poder germinativo, em poucos dias.
