Resumo: Chlorophyll synthesis, stomatal behaviour and CO2 balance were studied during the period of leaf ontogeny in seedlings of H. brasiliensis (lAN 873) and H. pauciflora grown under two water conditions. When submitted to a water stress H. pauciflora was able to maintain higher and more stable water potentials (Ψw) than other species. Reduction in photosynthesis rates in water stressed plants was associated to a drop in Ψw in both species. This reduction in H. brasiliensis was related to a decreasing 50% in chlorophyll synthesis and an increase in stomatal resistance. Under water stress H. pauciflora showed only an enhancement in the rates of photorespiration.

Arg. foram submetidas a déficit hídrico permanente a fim de se estudar a síntese de clorofila, resistência estomática à difusão da água e balanço de CO2 durante a ontogenia foliar. O estado hídrico das plantas, caracterizado pelo potencial hídrico (Ψw), mostrou os maiores decréscimos em H. brasiliensis ao passo que os potenciais de H. pauciflora permaneceram mais altos e estáveis. A diminuição da fotossíntese em plantas estressadas de ambas as espécies foi proporcional à queda do potencial hídrico. Em H. brasiliensis esta diminuição pode ser explicada por redução de aproximadamente 50% na síntese de clorofila e o aumento de cinco vezes de resistência estomática.
