Induction of in vivo mutation in chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev) cv. pink Repin breeding

Resumo: Mutation induction was used with the objective of obtaining mutants for flower colour of chrysanthemum, cv. Repin (pink colour). Rooted cuttings were irradiated with 20 Gy of gamma rays and before the selection the cutting back method was used to advance the generations. The frequency of colour mutants observed was 5.8%. Among the mutants obtained the white and dark-pink-coloured ones were evaluated in yield trial and post-harvest. The results indicated that these mutants mantained the same agronomical characteristics showed by the control, with the exception of plant height in the white mutant that was shorter. Due to commercial interest of the producers, these mutants were multiplied and released as new cultivars. The white flower colour mutant was named Cristiane and the dark-pink, Ingrid. This was the first example of cultivars from an ornamental plant released by mutation breeding in Brazil.

This was the first example of cultivars from an ornamental plant released by mutation breeding in Brazil.Objetivou-se adaptar e utilizar o método de indução de mutação por irradiação no melhoramento de crisântemo, para a obtenção de mutantes na coloração de pétalas da cultivar Repin Rosa. Mudas obtidas a partir de estacas enraizadas foram submetidas a irradiação com 20 Gy de raios-gama, aplicando-se a seguir o método de podas repetidas para avanço das gerações, antes da seleção dos mutantes. Observou-se uma freqüência de 5,80% de mutantes para coloração de pétalas. Dentre as várias colorações obtidas, os mutantes de cor branca e rosa-escuro foram selecionados, considerando-se a preferência do mercado consumidor, e incluídos em ensaios de produção e avaliação pós-colheita. Os resultados indicaram que, com exceção da altura de planta do mutante de cor branca, que foi menor, as demais características agronômicas foram semelhantes às da cultivar original. Estes mutantes foram multiplicados e lançados no comércio; o de cor branca foi denominado Cristiane, e o de cor rosa-escuro, Ingrid.
