Resumo: Intending to define an intercropping system for annual cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.r. latifolium Hutch), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), four trials were carried out (two in 1984 and two in 1985) in Umarizal and Rafael Fernandes, RN, Brazil. The annual cotton/cowpea association presented a more efficient land utilization than the annual cotton/sorghum system. Cotton yield when intercropped with cowpea was less affected than when spatially distributed on a (2:1) arrangement. There was no difference regarding the yield as related to the cowpea populations studied. Cotton + cowpea in 2:1 arrangement with 40 thousand cowpea plants per hectare was the most efficient association. Annual cotton + sorghum systems didn't present feasible benefits in term of land equivalent ratio (LER).
