Effect of aluminum on the absorption and translocation of phosphorus and on the mineral composition of two cultivars of wheat

Resumo: The effect of aluminum on the kinetic of absorption and translocation of phosphorus and mineral composition of Anahuac (sensitive) and BH-1146 (tolerant) wheat cultivars was measured. Aluminum at the levels of zero and 0.5 mg.l-1was used during the growth period except when the experiment on the kinetics of P-absorption and translocation was carried out. Aluminum reduced the Vmax of both cultivars although this effect was greater for the BH-1146 cultivar. It caused also some reduction on the Km of this cultivar and an increase for the Anahuac. Aluminum caused a reduction on the phosphorus translocation in the Anahuac and an increase in the BH-1146. Aluminum also caused differences between the cultivars in Ca, Zn and Mn concentration in the shoots and in P, Mg and Fe in the root system. In general, the BH-1146 presented higher concentrations of cations than the Anahuac with or without aluminum in solution. The differential tolerance of the cultivars to aluminum seems to be related to the absorption and translocation, not only of phosphorus but also of other nutrients.

The differential tolerance of the cultivars to aluminum seems to be related to the absorption and translocation, not only of phosphorus but also of other nutrients. Estudou-se o efeito do alumínio sobre a cinética de absorção e translocação de fósforo e sobre a composição mineral de duas cultivares de trigo, uma sensível (Anahuac) e outra tolerante (BH-1146) ao alumínio em solução nutritiva (pH 4,5). Foram utilizados os níveis de zero e 0,5 mg.l-1 de alumínio. O alumínio foi aplicado durante o período de crescimento das plantas, sendo retirado apenas durante os ensaios de cinética de absorção e de translocação de fósforo. O alumínio reduziu a Vmax das duas cultivares, sendo esta redução maior para a BH-1146 que para a Anahuac. Também reduziu ligeiramente o Km da BH-1146, embora tenha aumentado o da Anahuac. A translocação de fósforo nas cultivares foi influenciada diferencialmente pelo alumínio, havendo redução na da Anahuac e aumento na da BH-1146. Observou-se diferença entre as cultivares quanto aos teores de Ca, Zn e Mn na parte aérea, e de P, Mg e Fe, no sistema radicular, na presença de alumínio. De maneira geral, a cultivar BH-1146 apresentou maiores concentrações de cátions que a Anahuac, na presença ou não do alumínio na solução.
