Association between quantitative characters of Spondias tuberosa A. Camara

Resumo: Sixteen "umbu" trees (Spondias tuberosa A. Camara) of spontaneous occurrence were characterized and investigated at Petrolina, PE, Brazil. The phenotypic correlations, partial correlations and path analysis were estimated. The brix versus acidity and seed versus pulp weight presented high and positive phenotypic correlations, while the correlation between weight of fruit versus number of fruits/tree was negative. The path analysis study, adopting a chain diagram, revealed that the primary component, number of fruits/plant and the secondary components width of fruit and canopy diameter were the most important variables for "umbu" fruit production increase (kg/plant). The number of fruits/plant was influenced by the width of fruit and canopy diameter. The weights of seed and pulp seem to be the most important variables for increasing the weight of "umbu" fruit.

The weights of seed and pulp seem to be the most important variables for increasing the weight of "umbu" fruit.O processo de ocupação do semi-árido brasileiro tem provocado a perda da variabilidade genética de algumas espécies de ocorrência natural na região, como o umbuzeiro (Spondias tuberosa A. Camara). Este trabalho teve como objetivo o conhecimento das associações existentes entre alguns caracteres vegetativos e produtivos do umbuzeiro, de forma a auxiliar na identificação e preservação, em banco de germoplasma, dos indivíduos promissores da espécie. Foram caracterizadas e avaliadas, na safra de 1994/95, 16 árvores de umbuzeiro de ocorrência espontânea, em Petrolina, PE. Estabeleceu-se as correlações simples entre todos os caracteres avaliados, as correlações parciais entre alguns caracteres e a análise de trilha para a produção de frutos (kg/planta) e seus componentes primários e secundários. Os caracteres casca x polpa e caroço x polpa apresentaram correlações simples positivas e elevadas, enquanto a correlação peso do fruto x número de frutos/planta foi negativa. O aumento do número de frutos/planta pode ser conseguido com a seleção positiva nas variáveis largura do fruto e diâmetro da copa ou com a seleção negativa nos caracteres pesos do caroço, da polpa e da casca. Os pesos do caroço e da polpa, como variáveis primárias, e a largura do fruto, como variável secundária, apresentaram-se como as de maior importância para o aumento do peso médio do fruto do umbuzeiro.
