Resumo: The mango (Mangifera indica L.) belongs to the family Anacardiaceae, originally from southem Asia, more precisely from lndia, where it has been cultivated for more than 4,000 years from the Malay Islands. The number of species in the genus Mangifera is controversial. Mukherjee (1985) deseribes 35 speeies, while Bompard (1993) reports the existenee of 69 speeies, witb Mangifera indica as the most eommerciaIly important. In Brazil, large areas of sexual origin (non-grafted) mangos are eultivated. They show eonsiderable genetic variability as a result of intra- and inter-species breeding between the two speeies originally introdueed by the Portuguese. These were the Indian breed, with oblong to rounded fruits, red skin and monoembryonie seeds, represented by the "Florida Tommy Atkins", "Haden" and other eultivars, and lhe Philippine breed with long fruit, red to green skin, polyembrionic seeds, normally used as a rootstoek.
