Resumo: | From 1996 to 1998, three cycles of selection were carried out among half-sib families within the maize cv. BR5011-Sertanejo in northeastern Brazil. During each cycle, 196 half-sib families were evaluated by utilizing a 14 x 14 simple lattice design. The best families were recombined within the same agricultural year, thus allowing one generation to be obtained per year. Observations indicated that BR5011-Sertanejo possessed enough genetic variation to produce increments in green yield, indicating that BR5011-Sertanejo can be used as an alternative to the varieties grown in the northeastern region. Significant genotype x environment interaction indicated that the selection process needs to be conducted in different environments to improve the efficiency of family selection so that consistent estimates of genetic variance components can be obtained.. |
