Among the innovations brought by the Maria da Penha Law is the possibility of directing men who commit violence against women to discussion groups. One of the main issues presented in the discussion on these services relates to the lack of assessment studies on their efficiency. Aiming to contribute to the disclosure of the results of these interventions, a qualitative research was conducted focusing on speech analysis with men perpetrators and who were interviewed after having attended eight meetings of a discussion group of the 1st Domestic and Family Violence Court, in Rio de Janeiro. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed by the Thematic Analysis method. The men’s speeches are the same that can be found in other studies on interventions with men perpetrators. Initially, these men feel they have been wronged, they feel strange for serving a sentence. They don’t see themselves as perpetrators, but rather as victims of the women who charged them. Throughout the meetings,they start seeing their participation in the group differently, appreciating the information exchange and the contact with other men and the coordinators. They mention changes and strategies learned to handle stressful and conflict situations in a non-violent manner. Discussion groups prove to be powerful spaces that provide attendants with opportunities to denaturalize gender violence. The conclusions reached emphasize the importance of including these interventions in the policy to tackle violence, and articulating them with women assistance services and programs.
