Resumo: Objective: to evaluate the practice of drug prophylaxis for VTE in surgical patients in a general hospital in the Federal District. Methodology: retrospective cross-sectional observational study through the analysis of medical records of patients undergoing preoperative evaluation at Hospital Regional do Gama, DF, from January to June 2016. Results: In the present study, a great statistical difference was demonstrated between high-risk and intermediate-risk patients. Among the former, 41 patients (74.54%) received some form of prevention, and of these, 95.12% were prescribed in the proper dose. Of the 18 intermediate-risk patients, 10 (55.56%) were prescribed VTE prophylaxis, of which only 40% were prescribed at the appropriate dose, showing that, in this hospital, high-risk patients are more protected than at-risk patients intermediate and development of VTE. Conclusion: The performance of this work brought important contributions in relation to the field of thromboprophylaxis, and the objectives of the study were fully achieved in view of the results found.
