Facilitating cross-border logistics for international trade operations: a case study of intra-firm trade

Resumo: | Objective: To propose a model tactical plan to facilitate intra-firm trade in multinational companies. Method: Qualitative research with a deductive approach and a single case study, having as the unit of analysis the intra-firm trade of Nestlé S.A., between the Brazilian and Argentine subsidiaries. Main Results: The results demonstrated that cross-border logistics factors such as trade agreements, public-private partnerships, physical cross-border logistics, trade between subsidiaries, government agencies, costs related to trade facilitation, and collaboration and improvements can influence intra-firm trade. Based on these factors, it was possible to identify and confirm tactical options that were grouped under the processes of governance, performance, risk management, and collaboration and continuous improvement, in order to propose a tactical plan model to facilitate intra-firm trade in multinational companies. Relevance / Originality: Intra-firm trade participates in a relevant way in international trade. In 2014, foreign affiliates represented around 10% of world gross domestic product — GDP, characterizing companies by a global value chain, where the ability to manage cross-border logistics operations has become a necessity to maintain competitive advantage. Theoretical / Methodological Contributions: This is one of the first studies to present a list of determinants of tactical planning within an integrated framework for intra-firm trade. This research aims to expand the literature on intra-firm trade facilitation through cross-border logistics. |

Método: Investigación cualitativa con enfoque deductivo y estudio de caso único, teniendo como unidad de análisis el comercio intraempresarial de Nestlé S.A., entre las filiales brasileña y argentina. Resultados principales: los resultados encontrados demuestran que los factores de logística transfronteriza, como los acuerdos comerciales, las asociaciones público-privadas, la logística transfronteriza física, el comercio entre subsidiarias, las agencias gubernamentales, los costos relacionados con la facilitación del comercio y la colaboración y las mejoras pueden influir en la facilitación del comercio intraempresarial. A partir de estos factores, fue posible identificar y confirmar opciones tácticas agrupadas bajo los procesos de 'gobernanza', 'desempeño', 'gestión de riesgos' y 'colaboración y mejora continua', para una propuesta de modelo de plan táctico para la facilitación de Comercio intraempresarial para empresas multinacionales. Relevancia/originalidad: 'comercio intraempresarial' participa de manera relevante en el comercio internacional, donde en 2014, las filiales extranjeras representaron alrededor del 10% del PIB mundial (OCDE, 2019, p.10), caracterizando a las empresas por una cadena de valor global, donde la capacidad de gestionar operaciones logísticas transfronterizas se ha convertido en una necesidad para mantener una ventaja competitiva (OMAR et al., 2012). Aportes teóricos/metodológicos: es uno de los primeros trabajos que presenta una lista de determinantes de la planificación táctica dentro de un marco integrado para el comercio intraempresarial. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo ampliar la literatura sobre la facilitación del comercio intraempresarial a través de la logística transfronteriza.
