Resumo: | The development of computational infrastructure in the digital age has spawned a new paradigm that enables the storage and processing of data generated by human interaction with computer systems. This phenomenon, digital footprints, encompasses various explorable data sources, such as Search Trends. This approach involves collecting and analyzing data from people's interactions with search engines such as Google, Baidu, Naver, and Yandex, resulting in information about the search trends of a particular population. Although its use in social and economic analysis began in 2011, greater rigor in its application and further investigation of its limitations as a subject for innovation studies are required. Consequently, this thesis aims: to define methodological procedures for the use of Search Trends, empirically test them in the diffusion of new technologies, and compare them to other data sources used for the diffusion of interest in innovation. To achieve this objective, the thesis presents (1) a theoretical review of the use of search engines in administration, (2) a discussion and proposal of a formal protocol for the use of this data in research, (3) an empirical application of this protocol in a comparative study between BRICS and OECD countries, and (4) a comparative analysis of the diffusion of innovations using traditional data sources. |

Esse processo envolve a captura e análise dos dados de interação das pessoas com mecanismos de busca, como Google, Baidu, Naver e Yandex, resultando em informações sobre tendências de busca de uma determinada população. Apesar de seu uso em análises sociais e econômicas ter tido seu início em 2011, há a necessidade de dar um maior rigor em sua utilização, além de explorar mais seus limites como temática para o estudo da inovação. Neste sentido, os objetivos desta tese são: definir procedimentos metodológicos para a utilização de Search Trends; testá-los empiricamente na difusão de novas tecnologias e; compará-los com outras fontes de dados usadas para a difusão do interesse em uma inovação.
