The influence of spirituality in the health of the institutionalized elderly

Resumo: Spirituality involves the search for the meaning of life, which makes it essential for the promotion and recovery of health. The nurse in caring plays an important role in the spiritual dimension, since it needs to recognize the existence of internal phenomena of the individual in order to mobilize energy to increase hope and motivation to live. This study aimed to identify the influence of spirituality on health, according to the perception of the elderly residents in Long Stay Institution. Narrative research, of a qualitative nature, in which the data collection was carried out through the Focal Group. The data were analyzed by the Content Analysis based on Bardin proposal. For the institutionalized elderly, spirituality and spiritual practices help overcome the difficulties, especially when it comes to health problems, to provide hope and better acceptance. However, when analyzing the narratives, the nurse was perceived as a professional not involved in spiritual care. It is concluded that spirituality influences the health of the institutionalized elderly in a positive way, due to the improvement in the confrontation. The nurse as a professional responsible for caring needs to promote spirituality, considering the benefits for the maintenance and recovery of health situations.Key words: Spirituality; Elderly; Nursing

O enfermeiro ao cuidar possui papel importante na dimensão espiritual, pois necessita reconhecer a existência de fenômenos internos do indivíduo, a fim de mobilizar energia para aumentar a esperança e a motivação em viver. Este estudo teve como objetivo identificar a influência da espiritualidade na saúde, segundo a percepção dos idosos residentes em Instituição de Longa Permanência. Investigação narrativa, de natureza qualitativa, em que a coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de Grupo Focal. Os dados foram analisados pela Análise de Conteúdo baseada na proposta de Bardin. Para os idosos institucionalizados, a espiritualidade e as práticas espirituais ajudam a superar as dificuldades, principalmente quando se trata dos problemas de saúde, por proporcionar esperança e melhor aceitação. Porém ao analisar as narrativas percebeu-se o enfermeiro como profissional não envolvido na assistência espiritual. Conclui-se que a espiritualidade influencia na saúde do idoso institucionalizado de forma positiva, devido à melhora no enfrentamento. O enfermeiro como profissional responsável pelo cuidar necessita promover a espiritualidade, visto os benefícios para a manutenção e recuperação de situações de saúde.
