Resumo: Water quality affects the gills and can modify their morphophysiology. The aim of this study was to identify histological changes in the gills of hybrid tricross surubins, reared in captivity, under high concentrations of ionized ammonia (1.28 ± 1.28) at high alkaline pH (8.66 ± 0.53). Over 34 days of experiment, 16 specimens that died were necropsied and fragments of the gills were fixed in 10% neutral formalin and sent for histological processing. The slides were stained with periodic acid Schiff and hematoxylin and eosin associated with Alcian blue. The gills showed complete and incomplete lamellar fusions, epithelial detachment, bulging in the secondary lamellae, aneurysm, secondary branchial filament rupture, epithelial displacement, constriction of the main venous sinus, with a final survival rate of 20%. The importance of monitoring water quality is highlighted, aiming at the well-being as well as controlling fish mortality.
