Resumo: This article sought to initially analyze the impacts of the absence or presence of basic sanitation infrastructure for the propagation and dissemination of Covid-19 cases in the metropolitan region of Belém, capital of Pará. For this, a methodology based on exploratory analysis and content analysis was adopted, using scientific works already produced on the subject in question. It was possible to observe that regarding the mortality rate due to Covid-19 in the metropolitan region of Belém, the highest number of deaths was registered in Belém and in Castanhal, the lowest number of deaths in Marituba. The other municipalities had a mortality rate that ranged between 4 and 5.9%. The self-infection rate, compared to other municipalities, may be related to the absence of sewage collection and treatment services in the periphery, with the high flow of people in the most populous areas, deficiency in basic health care and/or disregard for prevention protocols against Covid-19. Allied to other factors, the absence of basic sanitation has allowed the spread of Covid-19 in the poorest neighborhoods of small, medium and large Brazilian cities. These observations also demonstrate the importance of further studies on the topic addressed in this article.
