Resumo: This work deals with the importance of studying the impact of physical inactivity in the elderly and how the work of the physical therapist and their knowledge of physical therapy techniques can be used in elderly patients, providing the patient and the professional with security in performing the techniques, and also, clarification on issues related to the practice of exercises and the promotion of the elderly's quality of life. The choice of this topic is justified by the need to study possible therapeutic interventions aimed at the physical strengthening of the elderly. The objective of this work is to present the main consequences of physical inactivity in the elderly and the main physical therapy interventions for physical and muscular strengthening. The problems addressed throughout the work are: What are the main aspects that contribute to physical inactivity in the elderly? How can physical exercises be efficient in elderly patients? What is the importance of therapeutic interventions in the physical and muscular strengthening of the elderly? How should the physical therapist work with elderly patients? The methodology applied in this work is the integrative literature review that analyzed works published between 2016-2021. From the analysis of the ten articles it is possible to perceive that physical exercises have a positive impact on the patient's quality of life elderly, because, with reduced mobility, targeted exercises without the need for overweight move the joint, reducing patients' symptoms and pain. Through muscle strengthening, the elderly can have a better quality of life while having less recurrent pain and preventing the process of muscle atrophy.
