The relationship of otherness for intercultural education: overcoming the remnants of eurocentrism

Resumo: The main issue of this paper is "how to provide a truly intercultural education within the school environment". Through decolonial thought I propose an analysis of our knowledge institutions (university, school, and discipline curriculum) to highlight the permanence of the Eurocentric perspective of knowledge validation. These remnants of Eurocentrism hierarchize the various ways of producing knowledge and, even worse, give exotic character to non-Western cultures. This article aims to enhance non-Western ways of dealing with the production of knowledge and learning, and from that, proposes the intercultural experience as a more comprehensive paradigm of learning, estrangement and ethnic-racial education.

Através do pensamento decolonial proponho uma análise de nossas instituições do conhecimento (universidade, escola e currículo disciplinar) para evidenciar a permanência de perspectivas eurocêntricas de validação de saberes. Estes resquícios de eurocentrismo acabam por hierarquizar as diversas formas de produzir conhecimento e, pior ainda, atribuem caráter exótico às culturas não ocidentais. Este artigo procura valorizar formas não ocidentais de lidar com a produção de conhecimento e com a aprendizagem e, a partir disso, propõe a vivência intercultural como um paradigma mais integral de aprendizagem, estranhamento e de educação étnico-racial.
