The presence of "aesthetic and body practices" of the Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict Irmandades in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina (1888-1914)

Resumo: Lay brotherhoods (irmandades) were meaningful popular associations in Brazilian colonial period. They were organized with deep links to devotion to a patron saint. The contribution of these religious entities for civil society and Church is invaluable. One must have in mind that colonial and imperial society at that time was just in its first steps of organization. These irmandades with their demanding commitments brought a significant input. In the religious realm the Church under Padroado regime painfully promote its normal religious activities. At that time these irmandades took in charge put forward the religious life of quite all people. Karla Leandro in her Dissertation has in mind to understand from within a irmandade of Florianopolis city, then, city of Desterro. Even the title is meaningful: They have fun in their way: feasts and death in the irmandade of Our Lady of Rosary and Saint Benedict, Florianopolis (1888-1940). In this Bibliographical Note we identify some merits of this research. In a second step we highlight its content making some suggestions. Some main issues are emphasized leaving the reader to take his conclusions.

A contribuição dessas irmandades para a sociedade civil e para a Igreja foi incalculável. Basta pensar que a sociedade colonial e imperial em processo de organização social recebeu das irmandades, com seus exigentes compromissos, uma contribuição significativa. No âmbito religioso, a contribuição aumenta, pois, a Igreja sob o regime de Padroado a duras penas dava conta de promover os atos religiosos e as irmandades se encarregaram de dinamizar a vida religiosa de uma boa parcela da população. Impressiona o número de irmandades presentes nas cidades e até no campo. Karla Leandro debruçou, em sua dissertação de mestrado, sobre uma irmandade da cidade de Florianópolis (Desterro) procurando compreendê-la por dentro. A dissertação intitula-se "Divertem-se então à sua maneira: festas e morte na Irmandade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito, Florianópolis (1888-1940)". Num primeiro momento desta Nota Bibliográfica, apontaremos alguns méritos do trabalho, para em seguida percorrer os capítulos sinalizando para seu conteúdo, apresentando sugestões e levantando alguns tópicos para que o leitor possa pensar sobre eles.
