Convergence of interests: liberalism and protestantism in the 19th century Brazil

This paper addresses the hypothesis that Protestantism provided support for the political movements that fought against the hegemony of conservative Catholicism in Brazil in the second half of the 19th Century. Against the tendency to consider Protestantism as an intentional catalyst of liberalism and republicanism, it is proposed that part of the Brazilian liberal layers availed itself of the spirit and practice brought by the north American Protestant missionaries against the conservatism of colonial Catholicism and that the Protestants took advantage of the liberals' reception to fight for freedom. There was a convergence between Liberals and Protestants resulting in modernization, but of a conservative kind, for the interests of the Protestants were rather religious than political or social. The mission of Protestantism became progressive in Brazil in the second half of the 19th Century, allied to liberalism, for religious and social instinct of survival.
