Public Religion: unfoldings of the mediatization of religion on the digital culture

Resumo: | This paper seeks to deepen the reflection on the phenomenon of contemporary communication in its interface with the Christian worship from the concept of "mediatization of religion." For this, it makes a conceptual rescue and a critical review of the concept emphasizing some logics present in the studies of media and religion (dependence, influence, subservience, prepotence) and some analytical perspectives (manipulation, institutionalization, commercialization). Then it reflects on the mediatization in general, and the digital mediatization of religion, through the networked socialization. It argues that, from this process, a "public religion" emerges, marked by a socially shared symbolic power through religious experimentation, which shifts the central role of ecclesiastical institutions in establishing beliefs and practices, and in configuring Christian worship in contemporary society. In conclusion, it argues that the changes in the relations of religious meaning drive the progressive and gradual transformation of the social conception of Christianism and Christian worship. |

Para isso, faz-se um resgate conceitual e uma revisão crítica do conceito, destacando algumas lógicas presentes em estudos da relação mídia e religião (dependência, influência, subserviência, prepotência) e algumas perspectivas de análise (manipulação, institucionalização, mercantilização). Em seguida, reflete-se sobre a midiatização em geral e especificamente a midiatização digital da religião, especialmente a partir do desenvolvimento das redes digitais. Argumenta-se que, desse processo, emerge uma “religião pública”, marcada por um poder simbólico compartilhado socialmente, mediante experimentação religiosa, que desloca o papel central das instituições eclesiais no estabelecimento de crenças e práticas e na configuração do culto cristão na sociedade contemporânea.
