Resumo: Space technology is one of the sectors that most invests in automation and integration of structures and equipment. Involving a huge number of different companies, it has always presented a challenge between integrating software and hardware from the most diverse areas. The computers needed to control and process this entire structure need to be agile, reliable and able to perform all challenges. The Linux operating system proved to be capable of accomplishing this mission, and is currently used in large reusable rockets or drones under Martian soil. This study, carried out with a bibliographic review, highlights the history and increase in the application of Linux, as well as space technology and its great challenges. The data obtained make it possible to state that NASA and SpaceX have changed the way teams and companies operate in space missions. Linux has enabled teams of scientists at universities or high-tech companies, but small, without large resources, to act in a vital way for the success of the new space age. The DM-2 space mission, from May 30, 2020, became proof of the success of using Linux.
