Reaffirming Identities: Demands for recognittion and “respect” in the professional training course of the agents of the municipal civil guard of Niterói

This paper analyzes the debate about the implementation of lethal weapons in the Municipal Civil Guard of Niterói (GCM) adopting an ethnography built from the monitoring of the application of the professional training course to the agents. During the course, permeated by militarism, the agents are submitted to the constant practice of the united order and, finally, to the patrol routine, introducing them to the “street practice”. The contact with these habits makes arise in the agents the longing for the use of lethal weapons, seeing them as a determining factor in their identity, especially to unlink them from an inferior image, known as “little guards”. In this sense, this study seeks to explore the intersection points between the militarization process of the Municipal Civil Guard of Niterói and the search of its agents for the “respect” of the population, based on their training process and their demands for the implementation of weapons as discourses to be analyzed.
