Fear of crime effects in routine and mental health of adolescents living in the city of Belém (PA) peripheral zones

This article shows the results of an exploratory study aiming to verify how fear of crime causes changes in routine and affects the mental health of adolescents, students and residents of peripheral zones of Belém, state of Pará where crime offenses occur more often and the adolescents witness violent situations on a daily basis. The results originate from the research first phase on urban violence, which will cover other zones to learn the new strategies created by the adolescents to face fear of crime resulting from public insecurity crime. The information for the research development were collected from 28 high school students, between 15 and 17 years of age, enrolled in a public school located in Begui, in the periphery of Belém, and one of the most violent areas in the state capital, according to State Secretary of Public Defense (SEGUP). It is found that fear is changing the adolescents’ routine and social living habits, as well as mental health, but also empowered resources of prevention and protection against crime, to avoid this feeling.
