The “heads of discipline”: children's inventivity in the 1930s

Resumo: The article investigates the daily school life of the “childish problems” analyzed by Arthur Ramos as director of the Serviço de Ortofrenia e Higiene Mental [Orthophrenia and Mental Hygiene Service] (SOHM) in Rio de Janeiro, focusing on the study Service files and the doctor's personal file. We sought to examine school practices from the perspective of “playgrounds”, approaching a group of children who called themselves “heads of discipline”, in the sense of, from their stories, dealing with indiscipline as an object performance of school services, specifically the SOHM. It was observed that children's inventiveness sometimes subverted the relationships established between adults and children, whether in school, public (like the street) or private (like home) spaces.

Se buscó examinar las prácticas escolares bajo la perspectiva de los “patios de recreo”, aproximándose a un grupo de niños que se autodenominaban “jefes de disciplina”, en el sentido de, a partir de sus historias, lidiar con la indisciplina mientras objeto de actuación de los servicios escolares, en específico, el SOHM. Se observó que la inventiva infantil, a veces, subvirtió las relaciones establecidas entre adultos y niños, fuera en los espacios escolares, público (como la calle) o privado (como la casa).L’article s’intéresse au quotidien scolaire des « enfants-problème » tels qu’Arthur Ramos les analysait lorsqu’il était directeur du Serviço de Ortofrenia e Higiene Mental (SOHM) de Rio de Janeiro, en privilégiant l’étude des dossiers du Service et des archives personnelles du médecin. L’objectif était d’examiner les pratiques scolaires dans une perspective liée aux « cours de récréation », centrée sur un groupe d’enfants qui s’autointitulaient « chefs de discipline », afin d’aborder a partir de leurs histoires l’indiscipline comme objet d’intervention des services d’éducation, en l’occurrence, du SOHM. On a observé que l’inventivité des enfants subvertissait parfois les relations établies entre les adultes et les enfants, que ce soit dans l’espace scolaire, public (comme la rue) ou encore privé (comme la maison).O artigo investiga o cotidiano escolar das “creanças problemas” analisadas por Arthur Ramos enquanto diretor do Serviço de Ortofrenia e Higiene Mental (SOHM) do Rio de Janeiro, privilegiando-se o estudo das fichas do Serviço e o arquivo pessoal do médico. Buscou-se examinar as práticas escolares sob a perspectiva dos “pátios de recreios”, aproximando-se de um grupo de crianças que se autointitulavam “chefes de disciplina”, no sentido de, a partir de suas histórias, lidar com a indisciplina enquanto objeto de atuação dos serviços escolares, em específico, o SOHM.
