The etymological origin of words is always a good initial guide to determine their meaning, a method that we can call conceptual or terminological phenomenology. The tradition of the term ethics is age-old. With the expression ethos, the ancient Greeks wanted to signify that dimension of human life on which norms, nomos, norms fall to provide parameters for deciding between equally possible and mutually contradictory options for future conduct. The concept of ethics has undergone profound changes since then and has almost as many definitions as there are authors who examine it. Its practical applicability, however, remains true to the original sense of habit, use, custom, right. From a pragmatic perspective, ethical norms fulfill the same vital function: they reduce the immense complexity of human relationships and help us decide how to act.
