Resumo: Study that presents a literary scenario of use of the big data technology, with emphasis on libraries. Discusses in the theoretical referential: informational pyramid, based on the given elements, information, knowledge and wisdom; Internet, addressing the 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 webs; and big data, considering its basic characteristics, represented by volume, speed and variety (3V), and examples of application of technology in the corporate, governmental, scientific and daily social segments. Characterizes as an exploratory, bibliographic and qualitative study by data collection. Presents, as results, the list of examples of the use of big data in the libraries of Washington University, Harvard University and Seattle Public; and the elaboration of a table suggestive of technology applications in library sectors according to the “3V” characteristics, such as volume-speed-variety in administration and circulation, volume-variety in the collection development sector and value-volume in the sector of references. Concludes that that the “3V” characteristics, seen as basic to big data technology and complemented by the complex, veracity and value properties, can assist in decision making in library sectors, such as administration, circulation, development of co-lectures and reference, in a scenario of information production and sharing promoted by information and communication technologies, such as the Internet and in an exponential sense.
