Resumo: | The article analyzes the black community's position within the modernizing organization that characterized the city of Rio de Janeiro at beginning of the twentieth century. It examines the specificity of this participation, wich took place outside of formal political-social channels. Special emphasis is placed on the leadership role played by the tias baianas (literally, Bahia aunts), women who through African-Brazilian religious centers and terreiros proved capable of bringing together a body of traditions that had been fragmented by the slave experience. Linking the idea of space with that of cultural identity, it is shown that of cultural identity, it is shown that the group of blacks from Bahia endeavored to re-territorialize its values and traditions, thereby leaving its imprint on the city's history |

A autora examina a especificidade dessa participação, que se manifestou fora dos canais político e institucionais formais. Especial ênfase é dada ao papel de liderança das "tias baianas", que se revelaram capazes de reunir, através de "centros" e "terreiros", todo um conjunto de tradições e experiências da escravidão havia.
