This article intends the struggle in defense of human rights held at Brazilian Congress during military rule (1964-1984), with the emphasis on the performance, in the 1970-1974 term, of Lysâneas Maciel, a member of the "autênticos" group of the opposition party, the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB). It tries to show how, in a context of ideological radicalization, with clandestine political organizations on one side, and military repressive action on the other, the "autênticos" were able to turn the MDB into a real opposition parliamentary front. This front has played a major role in the democratic process that began at the end of the decade with wide and unrestricted amnesty.
