"Only plastic surgery can 'fix' your nose": racism and eugenics in the column Elegância e Beleza of O Cruzeiro in the 1940s

Resumo: The text produces an archaeology of the phenomenon of plastic surgery based on the recommendations of beauty in the column Elegância e Beleza, from the magazine O Cruzeiro, in the 1940s. Considering the traces left in the periodical, we identify the existence of the discourse of racial improvement advocated by the Brazilian eugenics movement. We point out the ways in which the ideology of white racial domination was propagated in the enunciations of beauty, highlighting the subtle character of the proposals to conceal black and indigenous physiognomies in the early 20th century. We believe that Elegância e Beleza encouraged the adoption of aesthetic ideals compatible with the biopolitics of racism.

Teniendo en cuenta las huellas presentes en la publicación en análisis, identificamos un discurso de mejora racial propugnado por el movimiento eugenésico brasileño. Señalamos las formas de propagación de la ideología de la dominación racial blanca en los enunciados de belleza, sobre todo el carácter sutil de las propuestas para ocultar las fisonomías negra e indígena a principios del siglo XX. Elegância e Beleza puede haber promovido la adopción de ideales estéticos compatibles con la biopolítica del racismo.O texto produz uma arqueologia do fenômeno das cirurgias plásticas a partir das recomendações de beleza na coluna Elegância e Beleza, da revista O Cruzeiro, na década de 1940. Levando em consideração os vestígios deixados no periódico, identificamos a existência do discurso de aprimoramento racial defendido pelo movimento eugenista brasileiro. Apontamos as formas de propagação da ideologia de dominação racial branca nos enunciados de beleza, destacando o caráter sutil das propostas de ocultamento das fisionomias negras e indígenas no início do século XX.
