This article is about the representation of the symbolic opposition between Europe and America in the travel writings of Brazilian intellectuals of the XIXth century, especially in Oliveira Lima's works. It points out two positions on the topic. The first asserted the sharp differences between American equality and absolutist Europe, refusing the preponderance of aristocratic elites in ruling politics. The second sustained the agreement between both universes based on the enlightened elites' role as guides in processes of reform and modernization. Lima saw the Imperial German model of modernization as a possibility of canceling the opposition Europe-America, reconciling economic rationality with the intellectuals' political power.
