Histories of Fire and of the Landscapes Transformations in Central Brazil among Foreign Naturalists in the Nineteenth Century

Resumo: This article presents how foreign naturalists described the burning of the fields, grasslands, and savannas(cerrado) of Central Brazil in the nineteenth century, in a dialogue between the history of science andenvironmental history. It discusses how they engaged with fire, which raged in the region at the end of the dry season, describing its effects on the flora, the fauna, and the landscape. In naturalists’ documents, fire appears in complex ways, both as an element of destruction and environmental degradation and of life creation and stimulation of the adaptation of living beings, being an important agent for the formation of the Brazilian savannas.

En los documentos de los naturalistas, el fuego aparece de forma compleja tanto como elemento de destrucción y degradación como de creación de vida y estímulo para la adaptación de los seres al ser un importante agente de formación de los paisajes en las sabanas brasileñas.Este artigo apresenta como naturalistas estrangeiros descreveram o fogo nos campos, matos e cerradosdo Brasil Central no século XIX, num diálogo entre a história da ciência e a história ambiental. Discute-secomo eles se engajaram com as queimadas que grassavam anualmente a região ao final do período seco,descrevendo seus efeitos na flora, na fauna e nas paisagens.
