The article analyses the conditions that fostered the appearence of Brazil's first archival centers for history research, at the beginning of the seventies. Among the earliest centers to be created were the University of Campinas Centro de Documentação do Instituto de Filosofia e Ciências Humanas (1971), the Cândido Mendes University's Centro de Memória Social Brasileira (1972), and the Getúlio Vargas Foundation's Centro de Pesquisa e Documentação de História Contemporânea do Brasil / Cpdoc (1973). The revitalization of the Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa also dates to that same time. More importantly, however, this period witnessed the awakening - albeit at a slow, almost imperceptible pace - of a national consciousness concerning the importance of preserving public records and private documents as part of the nation's heritage. These centers undoubtedly played a vital role in changing the government attitude toward the protection of the nation's documentary heritage. In this sense, the technical and institutional modernization of Brazil's National Archive (1979/1980) can be considered a landmark project.
